Asphalt Crack Sealing

Asphalt Crack Sealing

Got cracks in your asphalt? You want to make sure you take care of those as soon as possible. They aren’t just an eyesore. One of the biggest mistakes you can make with your asphalt is letting cracks go. Small cracks just get bigger and more expensive to fix the longer you wait.

How do I fix my cracked asphalt?

If your regularly reseal your asphalt, small cracks should not be much of a problem. In fact, some sealants fix the cracks as they seal your pavement.

The best time to fix those small cracks in your asphalt is when they first appear. The larger they get, the more expensive and complicated it gets to fix. If you let those cracks go for too long, you may have to replace your asphalt – a more expensive situation.

If you are getting ready to fix your cracked asphalt, you may be able to DIY those small, hairline cracks. Cracks that are about half an inch deep or less can be fixed with a cold pour crack filler. You just use a caulking gun to apply the sealer, squeegee it and let the crack seal dry.

If it looks like the crack filler has sunk deeper into the crack and the surface isn’t even, you are dealing with a deeper crack and it’s time to call in the professionals.

How to fix deeper cracks in asphalt

When you’re dealing with a crack that is deeper than half an inch, it’s time to call a professional. At that point, you are going to need specialized equipment and training in order to correctly fix the cracks.

Repairing cracks that are more than half an inch wide requires rubberized hot pour crack filler. That means you’re going to need an asphalt crack repair machine to heat and apply the filler. Do you have one of those in your garage? Probably not. Time to call the professional. Once they fill the cracks with the hot rubberized crack filler, you have to allow the crack seal time to cure and dry.

Hot pours are best for cracks that are two inches wide or less. Anything larger than that is considered a pothole and requires an asphalt patch.
